Male infertility

Infertility is defined by the impossibility for a couple to conceive a child after a year or more of regular, unprotected  attempts ( 2 to 3 times a week ).

In most cases this infertility is linked to the quality of the sperm.

Causes of Male Infertility

Several factors affect the quality and quantity of sperm by inducing the production of non-viable sperm or anatomical abnormalities that lead to male infertility.

1 - Hormonal causes:

  • Hormonal disturbances
  • Certain congenital diseases
  • Pituitary tumor
  • General disease (eg diabetes)

2 - Male Reproductive System Diseases and Disorders:

  • Cryptorchidism
  • Varicocele
  • Cystic fibrosis

3 - Environmental factors:

  • Pollution
  • Poor diet
  • Tobacco and energy drinks
  • Pesticides
  • Radiations
  • Stress
  • Age
  • Heat
  • Clothes that are too tight

Spermogram abnormalities

Spermogram abnormalities are numerous and variable:

  • Hypospermia: full ejaculatory volume less than 1.5ml
  • Aspermia: zero ejaculatory volume
  • Hyperspermia: ejaculatory volume greater than 6 ml
  • Oligozoospermia: sperm concentration below 15 million/ml
  • Polyzoospermia: sperm concentration greater than 250 million/ml
  • Azoospermia is the medical condition of a man whose semen contains no sperm.
  • Cryptozoospermia is a sperm disorder that leads to male infertility and is characterized by the presence of very few sperm in the ejaculate.
  • Asthenozoospermia is a condition where the sperms have reduced motility (movement) compared to healthy ones.
  • Akinetospermia: zero mobility of all the spermatozoa in the collection
  • Necrozoospermia: decreased sperm vitality.
